First hand, keep the 6 points with the 5. Otherwise you are throwing 25 or 35 anyhow.
Inushtuk1 says: Welcome back Dan. Hope you did well and had fun at the GN.
Guest says: Dan and I came in 3rd in Canadian Doubles--out of 106 teams S :) (but I had a lousy card in GN to let down glmmcuskey and jmath on a 4person team for betting, with Rob Mederious. They'll never ask me again lol)
Guest says: Mederios
Inushtuk1 says: Congrats S on the 3rd finish in Canadian Doubles. Maybe the' ask you again, but expect *you* to pay for the whole team. ; - )
Guest says: hahaha...luckily, only jmath did well with a 28 card, so I felt less guilty!
Jazzselke says: Only other cash was a consolation playoff. But had a great time; also went to Crater Lake before and Seattle after.
Inushtuk1 says: Cool.

Agree with Dan above. Since we'll be discarding a 5 one way or another, may as well leave ourselves with the strongest hand we can.

3-6-9-9 will improve with 8 cuts (3,6,9)
2-6-9-9 will improve with 16 cuts (2,4,6,7,9)
5-6-9-9 will improve with 36 cuts (A,4,5,6,7,9,X)

Keep the chance for a dozen. Like a five being discarded it still could end up being only two points. Pick a nine for the lead. dec

I understand the reasoning behind those who chose to toss 2-3 to dealer. My first choice was to hold 3-6-9-9. Value of 2-3 is 7.52 points vs. 5.79 points for 2-5.

I would like to keep the 5-6 together but can't bring myself to throw 2-3. I'll lead the six.

This was my first hand of the Brookline, NH tournament. I tossed 23 and cut a 3. The rest of my day was a series of bad decisions and bad cuts.

I present it here because your first hand is supposed to be all out offense, but I wonder if 29 or 39 is the smarter move than to toss the dealer suited 23.

I always present scenarios where I made a bonehead play.

Now wait a minute people. Let's not go all coucou banane like my late father used to say in French. There are a few hands as GSND where you just have to make a defensive toss. This is one of them. I wouldn't toss the (2-3) unless I could start with 8 points or more. For example, 2-3-J-Q-K or similar. I would however chance the (2-3) with this hand if I was running out of race track. There's still plenty of time at this point.

This keep has a three card "Sweet Sixteen" as JQT calls it. But I don't think it works well that often. It will only work if you lead the 2 and can convince the Dealer to dump his 5 with your amazing psychological powers. If Dealer has 5-X-X-X it goes thus: 2(2)-5(7)-5(12-2)-X(22)-9(31-2). I haven't had much success with that. If Dealer plays his X-card at the count of 2 for a count of (12) now what do you do? You can't very well play the 9 from your sixteen. That leaves you with the 5. And if Dealer wasn't willing to part with his 5 on your 2 why would he/she do it now leaving themselves exposed to a (27-6). They would probably only do so if holding a 4 as well.

So its not a very sweet Sweet Sixteen in my opinion. so let's lead the always dangerous 9 and see what happens. At least we get (21-2) on the logical 6 reply; and if Dealer has a fistful of wee ones we will score on every reply but the 3.

The 3-5-6-9 has a *slightly* higher average hand, but 2-5-6-9 has the higher maximum of 9, and may peg slightly better as pointed out above.
Inushtuk1 says: BTW: I forgot to mention earlier that while 5-6-9-9 will improve with 36 cuts; 2-5-6-9 improves with 43 cuts, and 3-5-6-9 will do the same with 39 cuts. As far as the 9 lead goes, if Dealer plays an X-card for a count of (19) we can't very well play the 2 from our 16, so have to play our 5 for (24). *Now* Dealer can safely dump his 5 for (29-2); and we get (31-2) with our 2. But all we've done is exchange points with the Dealer so far, and Dealer still gets last card. Like I said before. Not a great Sweet Sixteen. We *could* however play our 6 on the X-card, and hope Dealer has a double run of face cards. Dealer says GO, and we dump our 2 for (27-1). Now *we* are in the driver's seat. Dealer leads another X-card to our remaining 5.

Even though 2 3 is probably correct, can't do it. Offense.

The only page 1 discard among these six is 2-9 and RAS is just not willing to play two points to open the game. So it's good-bye 2-3 and suited besides. Will lead the 9h. BTW if not opting to retain 5-6-9-9, would have retained 3-5-6-9. The combined values are much closer than one would expect because of that powerful crib average of the 2-3. Last day at State Fair; so might just show up here earlier as in past.
