Holding A-4-5-K is a much stronger hand over the one that I have chosen. Prefer A-4 in my crib rather than 9-T. |

Like keeping the 9-10 together here with the 5 in case we cut an 8 or J-any picture will help hand and crib |

Very Interesting Puzzle, as we might Toss (5 K), or Toss (9 T), or Toss (5 9), or even Toss (A 4).
Last time, I liked Toss (5 8), but here, the Middle Card has been switched to a 9 Card, and so we have Toss (9 T) to consider, and I like throwing 'touching' cards into my Crib. I still have a disdain for Toss (A 4), but I think my second choice today would be Toss (5 K). A solitary 5 Card in the Crib will often be superior to Toss (A 4). But for overall best synergy, why not retain Four Points in Hand, and then Toss (9 T) 'touching' cards? It seems like the most logical way to 'split' this arrangement. JQT says: Not only do those 'touching' cards of Toss (9 T) do well (from either Pone's Discard *or* the Cut) after an 8 Card or a Jack, but this Hand of ours is *really* helped significantly by many other different Cuts: Ace, Trey, 4 Card, 5 Card, 6 Card, or King (AAA, 3333, 444, 555, 6666, KKK), or about Twenty Cuts. Other Cuts also add points, namely *any* Ten Card (or "X") will add Four Points, and half of those shall also aid the Crib. As if this were not enough, as Dealer, this hand promises to peg well, and RAS covers this in excellent detail (below) so I won't repeat his ideas. I might only differ after a 4 Card Lead, after which I may play the King, looking to 'snag' a (15=2) with the Ace, and also retaining the (4 5) combo for perhaps contriving and committing further mayhem in order to culminate calamity against our malicious Pone. |

Never been keen on either 9-5 or 5-A . I like keeping the chances on a Jack or even another five. Eight points could work in the crib also on a nickel cut. dec |

It's worth keeping the 9-10 together. But in hand or crib? Opted for A-4 throw. Right or wrong? |

Holding 6 points combined by tossing either A4 or 59; would not give up 2 points to throw 910. Keeping the adjoining 910 in the hand decides the A4 or 59 issue. |

The pegs favor current dealer by a considerable amount to be first deal above 44 and also win the game. The dealt hand is below expected average but the 10 cut helps. The 5-9-10-K gets help from 32 cuts. The A-4-5-K gets help from 34. The 1-4 to the crib has a full point higher average than the 9-10. I would have to yield to more experienced players about the potential pegging disadvantage of keeping a lone Ace in my hand . I think the K is my best lead choice because I can reply with a 5. But if corrected I have learned something. I respect the logic of both Rob & JQT choices which shows why James’ puzzle is most interesting. Eolus619 says: Add...I can reply with a 5 if Pone replies to my K with a 5 and 15-2. Eolus619 says: forget the pegging logic.....a massive brain skip mistake. I AM DEALER ... |

I wasn’t sure whether to put 9 10 or 5K in my crib but didn’t consider the popular A 4. he points I’d hopefully earn from 5K won the day. RubyTuesday says: *The* not *he*. |

10-8 isn't too bad, but 10-9 is better. It's a shame not to get a "five" in the crib though. |

Only tossing A-4 or 5-9 guarantees us at least 6 points in hand & crib combined. |

Ace can be a pegging liability in dealers hand. Tips the scale in favor of putting in the crib. |

plenty of cuts to help, 5K in crib is fine with me too. |

Npthing to defend here. Go for distance with the deal at hole 33. That determines the retention and discard for me. Holding A-4-5-K has such a superior potential hand value that the other choices cannot make-up he difference in peg points and added crib value. Will play on the lead and take any pegs offered. Will get rid of the lone 5 on any X-point lead. Will pair an Ace if led believing n/d in this relative position would hold an A-A to end pegging sequence. Would also pair a four as it is the safest of the small card leads to pair as is a preferred lead over other cards even if alone. On average should have the next deal at or about hole 59 with non-dealer at hole 53, needing 16 to reach 3rd street CPZ 69-73. Appears to me that playing offense strategy here and for the next few hands will put this game solidly in the win column for me. If not playing these four, would have discarded A-4. As in yesterday's puzzle the top four discards (9-10, A-4, 5-K, and 5-9) are within .3 of a point in combined value in decreasing value as shown if choosing an offense pegging strategy. JQT says: It's nice to see Keep (A 4 5 K) climbing steadily throughout the afternoon in the vicious voting arena (above) today; and while we may not win the Popular Vote, I think we might possibly obtain enough strategic votes in order to secure VICTORY within the Electoral Cribbage College, which isn't really a thing, but maybe we could . . . |

I like the K5 here, it keep the connected 9-T together and gives us real upside in the crib. A lot of pegging options as well. |

I think it's between A-4-10-K (5-9), A-4-5-K (9-10), 5-9-10-K (A-4) and A-4-9-10 (5-K):
A-4-10-K: 4pts + 5¼pts (Schell: 5.43) = 9¼pts A-4-5-K: 4pts + 4¼pts (Schell: 4.29) = 8¼pts 5-9-10-K: 4pts + 5¼pts (Schell: 5.43) = 9¼pts A-4-9-10: 2pts + 6½pts (Schell: 6.66) = 8½pts Potentail: A-4-10-K: Improves with AAA, 444, 555 + 14xXs = 23 cuts = 23/46 = 50.0% up to 8/10pts with AAA, 444, 555, 101010, KKK = 15 cuts. A-4-5-K: Improves with AAA, 3333, 444, 555, 6666, 999 + 14xXs = 34 cuts = 34/46 = 73.9% up to 7/8/9/10pts with AAA, 3333, 444, 555, 6666 + 14xXs = 31 cuts. 5-9-10-K: Improves with AAA, 555, 6666, 8888, 999 + 14xXs = 31 cuts = 31/46 = 67.4% up to 7/8/9/10pts with 555, 8888, 101010, JJJJ, KKK = 17 cuts. A-4-9-10: Improves with AAA, 2222, 444, 555, 6666, 8888, 999 + 14xXs = 38 cuts = 38/46 = 82.6% up to 5/6/7/8/10pts with AAA, 444, 555, 8888, 101010, JJJJ = 20 cuts. Position: If we were First Dealer we scored 7pts above average and opponent scored only 1pt above average. So I'll continue to play Defense. Pegging: I think A-4-5-K should peg the best but playing Defense the other three will peg well also. Summary: A-4-10-K and 5-9-10-K have the best starting values at 9¼pts. 5-9-10-K has more cuts for improvement and 17 cuts for 7-10pts. A-4-5-K has the most cuts for improvement and 31 cuts for 7-10pts so I think it will catch up the 1pt. Also the hand will peg well so I'll throw the 9-10. |

At 33*-27 playing a Defense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
________________Pone's Defense___Hand__Pegs___Crib_Total___W6 %____W7 % A-4-5-K____7.09+(-1.91)+4.20=9.38____12.7____41.4 5-9-10-K___6.22+(-2.05)+5.22=9.35____11.4____40.2 A-4-9-10___4.65+(-1.85)+6.51=9.31____11.0____39.7 A-4-10-K___5.91+(-1.98)+5.25=9.18____10.5____39.9 Defense______L6 %____L7 % A-4-5-K_______7.5_____23.8 5-9-10-K______7.3_____23.9 A-4-9-10______7.1_____23.6 A-4-10-K______6.5_____22.4 A-4-5-K is best for expected averages but only by 0.03pt over 5-9-10-K. However A-4-5-K is appreciably best for Win %s and although A-4-10-K is lowest for Loss %s A-4-5-K is very slightly lower than 5-9-10-K too. So I'll select 9-10 to discard. After the 10 cut I'll play Defense to the lead. |
