Tossing the two Queens leaves hand that starts at 6 points and has a maximum of 14 points.
The only other choice I can see, is tossing 8-Q for a hand that starts with 4 points and has a maximum of 8 points- that's quite a lot of points to lose as 8=Q is valued at only around one point less than tossing the two Queens. |

95 or more is the goal so its more about our position then theirs at this junction of the game. Set up an eight-eight or eight-seven on end pegging if possible. dec dgergens says: I know it's better to remain silent and be though a fool than to ask you to explain, "Set up an eight-eight or eight-seven on end pegging if possible." dgergens says: Just in case there was any doubt . . .
Guest says: Lead the eight .. maybe they play low enough after you play the five next maybe finish with seven - eight for three. It helps to see the cut card for any pegging insights. dec dgergens says: I'm sitting hear beating my head on how finishing with a 7,8 can get me 3 pts, but I think I get it, you mean if they play low enough AND use up all their cards. Si? Guest says: 8-2-5-X-go.. 3-A .. 7-8 for 3. That might also work with a seven lead also. dec JQT says: Sometimes when we are Pone, and frequently when we are the Dealer, while we are pegging in Cribbage, we must say "go" while we are still holding two cards. During these times, if our Opponent "plays out" the remainder of his or her cards, now we are left to finish up the pegging by playing our last two cards in rapid succession or "back-to-back." This is why, whenever possible (as in today's hand), it really pays off if we can retain two final cards that either form a PAIR, or that add up to FIFTEEN. Therefore, dec is providing us good advice, and a gentle reminder, to attempt to do this today. It works less often when we are Pone, but it frequently happens on *either* side of the board when, as is the case today, we are holding cards that all rank five or higher (no "small" cards). And in fact when we are the Dealer, there will be those rare occasions when we say "go" while holding THREE CARDS, and thus we can sometimes score Nine Points (Two for a PAIR, then Six for PAIRS ROYAL, and One for Last Card). Even more common with three cards is the ability to score a RUN using our own three remaining cards, as long as we REMEMBER TO KEEP THEM! Saving cards that have scoring or pegging potential in Cribbage is frequently a rewarding maneuver, and it's a tactic that I have borrowed directly from the old military saying and dubbed, "Keeping your powder dry." |

Throwing the Queens is much safer than throwing the 8 Cards, and it seems we must do one or the other to assure we reach POSITION. |

Ditto and ditto... dgergens says: Yes, I've had Glenmorangie. The port wood finish was one of my favorites for years; beautiful color to go with the taste. But they stopped making it. I have not tried the Quinta Ruban, which I understand to be Glenmorangie's current port wood offering. I never really cared for the plain Glenmorangie. I tend to prefer the really strong flavor SMS's and have a list of favorites; can't just name one. Jazzselke says: Than lin s for the recommendations! JQT says: For those who enjoy Bourbon, here is a very good summary of affordable varieties available in most areas: https://www.bourbonbanter.com/banter/how-the-bourbon-crusaders-determined-the-best-bourbons-on-the-shelf/ |

Even with 12 points I’ll lead the eight of diamonds and take whatever pegs I can get. |

Curl your nose and toss the ladies. Lead an 8 and try to play off. In the dealer engages, then you have to play offense, no escape card.
I should have excellent position providing the dealer doesn't have a big hand or crib. horus93 says: He'd need a VERY big hand and crib indeed, 38 points, to gain superior position by outscoring us! |

Had the cut been unhelpful, would've led the 5 hoping to spring the "Langley trap":
5(5)-X(15/2)-8(23)-go-8(31/4). With a dozen in hand, I'll lead 8d. |

Interesting that (so far) today's posters have all tossed the Q-Q. I seriously debated the 8-Q for a while until I decided on where I wanted to be after this deal. As others said, lead the 8d. |

Giving away points with the Q's is the least painful, made slightly less painful by having one 5 in my hand. Jazzselke says: Have you tried Glenmorangie single-malt? dgergens says: Answer inside your box. |

At this position (+1/-16) we should play offense imo. This should get us the most points and I'm not usually too worried about tossing a pair of X's even in more balanced or defensive positions. Lead an eight and peg whatever I can. |

There is more potential both in pegging, and hand value by tossing the queens. The 7 starter cards tells me that the most the crib will be is 8 points (9 if the dealer tossed the Jh to complete the double run). This hand gives me a maximum of 14 points. Lead the 8 and possibly surprise him with the 5 for decent pegging. The position at my deal could be 99*-88, but time will tell. |

Primary consideration here is to reach 4th street CPZ 95-99 for upcoming deal. So it is goodbye Q-Q. No time for defense with an 8-Q discard. Might have considered that if at hole 93. Lead the 8d, likely drop that lone five next play, thus showing two diamonds an ridding myself of one of crib's most dangerous singles to retain.
In cribbage, we are often rewarded when making a goo decision. Lo, a 7 on the deck, and RAS will be at a minimum of 99 to deal. Ras2829 says: BTW the chance of losing with the deal from 99 is 1/10. |

Three discards? 7-Q, 8-Q and Q-Q:
5-8-8-Q: 4pts - 4¼pts (Schell: 4.32) = -¼pt 5-7-8-Q: 4pts - 4¼pts (Schell: 4.31) = -¼pt 5-7-8-8: 6pts - 5¾pts (Schell: 5.79) = +¼pt Potential: 5-8-8-Q: Improves with 2222, 555, 777, 88 + 14xXs = 26 cuts = 26/46 = 56.5% up to 8pts with 2222, 555, 777, 88, QQ = 14 cuts. 5-7-8-Q: Improves with 2222, 3333, 555, 6666, 777, 88, 9999 + 14xXs = 38 cuts = 38/46 = 82.6% up to 7/8pts with 555, 6666, 777, 88, 9999, QQ = 18 cuts. 5-7-8-8: Improves with 2222, 3333, 555, 6666, 777, 88, 9999 + 14xXs = 38 cuts = 38/46 = 82.6% up to 10/12/14pts with 2222, 6666, 777, 88, 9999 = 17 cuts. Pegging: I think 5-7-8-Q and 5-7-8-8 will peg better and similarly. Position: Dealer is well into 3rd street CPZ but we only need 9pts to reach 4th street positional hole. I'll play cautious offense. Summary: 5-7-8-8 starts with ½pt more than the other two and it has better potential and a higher maximum. So I'll throw the Q-Q. |

At 97-73* playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
_______________Our Offense___Hand_Pegs__Crib___Total____W2 %___W3 % 5-7-8-8___9.13+1.35+(-5.77)=4.71____12.4____65.9 5-7-8-Q*__6.35+1.57+(-3.80)=4.12_____5.5____54.1 5-8-8-Q___5.74+1.26+(-3.68)=3.32_____3.8____46.1 5-7-Q-Q___7.83+1.35+(-5.87)=3.31_____7.9____58.8 Offense_______L2 %___L3 % 5-7-8-8_______0.1____6.5 5-7-8-Q*______0.1____6.5 5-8-8-Q_______0.1____7.3 5-7-Q-Q_______0.5____8.1 5-7-8-8 is 0.59pt best for expected averages and is very much best for Win %s and slightly best for Loss %s. So I'll select Q-Q to discard. After the 7 cut I'll lead an 8 and play Defense: Lead________Dealer's Pegging Pts. 8_________________(-2.02) 7_________________(-2.14) 5_________________(-3.11) |
