If this isn’t 100 percent no hand will ever be
Ras2829 says: Hi mrob2199: If so, am sure this will be the first. Bet somebody holds 5-5-5-7, discards 8-J choosing defense with opponent 7 points from win.
arthurk says: This was me Ras and I have never felt dumber!!!
MiketheExpert says: At least 3 people have thus far :-)
scottcrib says: I wonder what the highest percentage puzzle has been?

Have had one 29-hand in official play in over three decades. Have dealt six to others in or out of officialdom. It is a beautiful thing. Think JQT arranged this cut with the webmaster? Could it be totally random on such a day? Somehow, I just knew this was coming.
Ras2829 says: Lead a five, avoid pegs. None needed from hole 92! Hope dealer doesn't pair your five!!
fentesk says: In chuckled more than I care to admit at your comment about the paired five, thanks for that today. Have a happy Dyngus Day!
MiketheExpert says: Have had 2 28-pt hands online against other players, and 1 in a "warm-up" game against computer. Never had the privilege of being dealt a 29-hand anywhere. Hopefully I still have three decades left to see one of these days!
MiketheExpert says: Btw, one of these 28-ptrs was about a couple weeks ago playing a came on cardsgames.io :)
SallyAnn3 says: RAS, Jeff Shimp has never had one! He is an original ACC player is 85 this month. PLays in his club, our club and travels a lot, and still, no 29!
Ras2829 says: Hi SallyAnn3: And Jeff Shimp is one of the finest men to ever walk the planet earth. Please convey my respect for him in all ways possible.
SallyAnn3 says: I most certainly will. He'll be thrilled. BTW, he is the source of my not being afraid to toss 9-9 or 6-9.

Well, that was pleasant. Lead the 5. Prayer answered.

SallyAnn3 says: Greg, CONGRATS on being the #2 ranked player so far this season in online ACC play! meatloaf is holding at #1, but is going to his the 150 limit early as he is trying to break the record for most wins in one season. He is rying to knock out Mike Fetchel with a record of 16.
dec says: First between Greg and Olney those two has a high point count with quite a few to play those are the best contenders so far to finish high at the end. Second I believe the win amount will continue even after playing 150 times. I'm just in the same aisle with Mike to reach the next level two Stars ** dec
SallyAnn3 says: All very true, and I can't wait for both of you to become the first IRP 2 star players!
Gougie00 says: TY. Either getting 12+ or having my head handed back to me. 6 wins or 3 wins, nothing between.

It probably does take April Fools and Easter to get this hand in this position.

I’ve had two 29 hands in kitchen table games only. My dad played 70 years and the only 29 hand he ever saw was the one I had against him. I also had one playing HalsCrib.
wasa says: I have only had one playing "Cribbage Pro" on my phone. Just checked stats... in 26,244 games I have had one (1) 29 point hand and twenty (20) 28 point hands.
MiketheExpert says: I think I also "forgot" the 28-pt hands when I played at E-cribbage pro for a short while. There were 2 I believe, and I probably had not reached 2,000 games. So those percentages seem to make sense!

I'm all for playing desperate defense in losing positions holding bad cards, like 45-59*, and anyone who isn't functionally illiterate can follow my reasoning and see how this can work, but the odds of cutting a five will be way higher than the odds of holding dealer to 7 points over the next two hands, while counting out ourselves as dealer to boot.

Was disappointed the bot picked defense yesterday; I don’t think that was a rational strategic decision. I could see balanced or even defense with a favorable cut (a 3 with 3369 etc), or a cut that threatened a big crib, but wouldn’t evaluate my initial discard with defense in mind. And unless someone can make a solid, theoretical case for playing defense at that score, I remain unconvinced. Based on my experience with bot-devotees, won't hold my breath for that. Really did want to see the “offense” numbers for AA33 vs 3369, since the more I thought about it the more it seemed like a toss-up, or the sort of thing that a computer would call better than a human. The AA33 does have a higher hand mean (by 0.1 lol), and will come out ahead most of the time, but it also has some cuts for 4, etc., not an easy decision.
zeke76 says: Besides if you went for defense and cut the 5, you’d never forgive yourself or live it down!
cribbagepogo says: I was next to guy in the club that had two J's and threw the right one into the crib and cut a 5. Duh!!

SallyAnn3 says: Hey Mike, see the post I wrot to Greg, please. You are a target lol. Jerry Griffin has at least 13 now, maybe 14/15. He is on fire and determined.

Happy April's Fools Day puzzle!! If you made the right pick, looks like you may have just picked up your first 29-pt hand to win this game!!
MiketheExpert says: Leading one of those 5's as well. Just don't let dealer peg 7 points to win before you can count it!

Really now.....c'mon.... ask yourself this....how many times in your life do get a chance to even hold for a 29?
Ras2829 says: Hi Sgt Pegger: If you play 100 games weekly (electronic and live) you can expect to pick up three fives and a Jack with the absent five to match the suit of the Jack 3-4 times annually. If playing a dozen or so weekly, you might see those cards once in five years. Pretty rare for sure even with heavy volume of play.

I'd definitely go for the 29 as I've never had one in "real life" only against a bot. Pity this doesn't count as real life either! Is this an April Fool's joke??

At 92-114* playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:

___________________Our
Offense___Hand___Pegs___Crib___Total____Win %____Loss %
5-5-5-J____16.63+0.87+(-7.13)=10.37______2.2______97.8
5-5-5-7____11.78+1.15+(-3.97)= 8.96______0.0______95.3
5-5-5-8____11.00+0.89+(-4.02)= 7.87______0.0______94.8

5-5-5-J gives us a small chance to win so I'll select the 7-8 to discard.

After the 5H cut I'll lead a 5 and play Defense:

Lead____________Dealer's Pegging Points
5______________________(-3.10)
J______________________(-3.38)

Finally got one right! Lol. I don’t know that I could pass up the chance to hold for 29, even if cost me a game. 🤣

Better than my games have been lately. I’ve been trying to “study up” on Cribbage. Rereading the Colvert book, reading Cribbage: A New Concept, going through the Cribbage Forum page, all to no apparent avail! If anything, my average has dropped!

Maybe something will stick someday. Until such time, I’ll keep checking out the much-smarter people than I and their responses on this fine page.
