Split the run to put a 5 in the crib. 3-5 > A-4

What the book recommends. Non dealer will they have to do 2-4 or forced to do 3-4. Luck of the draw. dec |

5-Q for me today. Not a great looking hand this morning…the 3-4-5 double run could come to fruition…at the expense of our crib. I’m not willing to sabotage the crib at this point and will keep the K and three low cards to try and peg some. If our opponent has a dangling low card, we could try and make something out of the 3-4 on our second sequence.
I’ll admit I didn’t consider 3-5 as hard as I should’ve, but that is the clear alternative to 5-Q. Maintaining four points between hand and crib, plus a 5 in the crib is a good way to go this morning. Jazzselke says: How about a combined 6? Jazzselke says: ...unless you feel strongly about the pegging potential of A34K. kal79 says: Hi Jazzselke…assuming your reference to the combined 6 includes the cut card? I should’ve been clearer, but I was referring to a combined 4 pre-cut. kal79 says: Correct me if I’m missing something, but tossing 3-5 and 5-Q both start with a combined four points, but the 7 cut brings us to six combined, again with both hands. Very interesting results today, as the vast majority toss 3-5! Inushtuk1 says: Hi kal79. What Dan means is that (3-5) starts with 4 in the hand, and a guaranteed 2 more in the Crib. (5-X) starts with 2 in the hand, plus 2 in the Crib. kal79 says: That makes more sense. Thank you for clarifying! |

One of Ras's introductory hands. To a newer player, or at least when I was a newer player, seems counter-intuitive to break up the run. SallyAnn3 says: Welome back! Counterintuitive is the perfect word for this, and exactly what I did lol |

I like 3 5 in my crib. I’d have liked to keep the run, but needs must. |

We shouldn't have to work on Labor Day.

I stillllllllllllll haven't gotten this etched in my mind! Maybe making this mistake will finally do the trick.
JQT says: When we are the Dealer holding a Run-of-Three, and it either begins or ends with a 5 Card, we can sometimes obtain more Combined Points if we place that 5 Card into our Crib. SallyAnn3 says: Ahhhh...good point. Thanks,John! |

I submitted this puzzle in August 2017. I learned my lesson. But there's not much difference in expected averages between four different discards. I will play offense to the lead after the 7 cut. Inushtuk1 says: Where it gets interesting for the Dealer, is when the X-Cards are 10-J, or even better, J-Q. Ras2829 says: Hi Inushtuk1: And it's taken me more than 7 years to catch up to your thinking of so long ago. |

Also stashing a 5 in the crib, and keeping four points (and coincidentally a 4 card) in hand. |

Let's keep plugging along! Would there be situations where I might discard something different, such as (A4), (AK) or even (5K)? I'm sure there are, but I can't think of a good reason to stray away from here. |

we play a game of choices…there is an axiom..as dealer sometimes the crib just gets the left over trash.. it’s good to know what left over trash looks like ..have a look at the values of dealer discards involving a K or Q…then remember the dealer gets to combine points from hand+ crib

An oft seen hand from Ras. He pitches 3-5. Chambers suggests A-X is stronger and is a better pegger. I mutated to Ras's way but have had no personal experiences with this hand at the table. |

Much rather keep 6 combined points this way - 3-5 in the crib is much superior vs. A-K. |

t 12*-14 playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
_______________Our Offense___Hand_Pegs_Crib_Total____W8 %____W9 % A-3-4-K____4.72+3.30+6.51=14.62____24.1____23.6 A-3-4-Q____4.72+3.41+6.47=14.60____24.1____23.6 3-4-5-Q____7.98+3.50+3.10=14.58____24.3____24.4 3-4-5-K____7.98+3.48+3.09=14.55____24.3____24.3 A-4-Q-K____6.17+2.39+5.79=14.35____24.9____26.5 3-5-Q-K____6.37+2.72+5.16=14.27____23.9____24.4 Offense_______L8 %____L9 % A-3-4-K________36.9____51.9 A-3-4-Q________36.9____51.9 3-4-5-Q________36.1____51.0 3-4-5-K________36.1____51.0 A-4-Q-K________33.7____48.6 3-5-Q-K________35.8____50.9 A-3-4-K is best for expected averages by a slim margin while A-4-Q-K is slightly best for Win %s and lowest for Loss %s. However as it's the start of the game I'll decide based on the expected averages and select 5-Q to discard. After the 7 cut I'll play Offense to the lead. Ras2829 says: HalscribCLX says it all for me. If 5-Q had not been suited, would have tossed 5-K. In my earlier cribbage days, would have tossed 3-5 every time. Inushtuk1 says: My math says A-3-4-Q((5-K) unsuited is best by 0.07 points. The (5-Q) suited is only better than (5-K) by 0.04 points, but the A-3-4-Q is better for offensive pegs by 0.11 points. Inushtuk1 says: I still don't think offense is the play before the cut. Optimal for me, and (3-5) fits the bill here. |
