Instructional hand by Ras - 79 a weak throw, so 23 is the toss even though 5 is only providing 2 points to the hand. Holding the adjoining 910 helps, but would play the hand the same way even with 23579K. SallyAnn3 says: yay--I did it your way :) |

Normally, I would choose between 2-3 and 7-9. But, this is a Ras puzzle, so let me try to analyze the position. We need 5 holes to get to our par position (60), which we will certainly do. Pone needs 13 holes to get to his par position (70), so maybe I should be playing defense to hold Pone back. If so, then I suspect the 5-7 pitch gives me enough room to minimize Pone's pegging. Not something I would normally do, but I am still trying to improve my positional decisions. Am very interested in reading how others approach this. Eolus619 says: Morning Mark..if you have time plz explain your comment on Par being 60 for dealer..is that because it is ten away from 70 and
Pone averages earning ten points ( for next hand) ? thx Eolus619 says: to clarify..my thinking is in the CPZ approach ..69-73 would be the next par goal ..ahead and dealing from that range ..could be wrong MarktheShark says: I could easily be wrong. Is not 1st Dealer's first par hole at 08? Making his next par holes (as Dealer) 34 and then 60, etc.? 1st Pone needs a great hand to first reach hole 18 to be on par. Making his next par holes (as Pone) 44 and then 70, etc.? So, 60 for Dealer and 70 for Pone when Hand 5 (dealt by 1st Dealer) is completed. CPZ ranges are a few holes past those par holes. MarktheShark says: And, yes, Dealer wants to next be at hole 70 (69-73) when he deals Hand 7. His par hole is 86 after that hand is completed. Eolus619 says: thx for the explanation..i understand what you wrote. I use the CPZ methodology..so those CPZ par ranges are not related to reaching them in a ascending numbered hand sequence in the game like Colvert’s par holes are setup. with CPZ..the goal is to be ahead and dealing first as deep into each of the 4 zones as possible …regardless of what # hand it is in the game ..always appreciate your insights MarktheShark says: When I reread your posting, I finally realized when you wrote "ahead and dealing" that we were both saying the same thing. I want to know where I need to be when the current hand is completed. That decides if I need to be aggressive or defensive during that hand. Eolus619 says: just for fyi..Colvert’s dealer par holes by hand sequence are
7-17–33-43-59-69-85-95-111-121…all these based in the 26 theory cycle. Eolus619 says: one other point ..whether a player plays board position or not ..and what mythology they use to decide on strategy if they do is up to them..so no judgement by me about what you initially wrote above about 60 be a par hole for dealer Eolus619 says: mythology might work better than methodology …but your call on that too..geez |

Too close to call. My top 3 tosses, 5-7; 7-9, and 2-3; each score 13.2. I kept the touchers. |

J-8-6 are cuts that increase hand five to six points. The 2-3 crib numbers are very good. dec |

I’m no good at analysis, the discard tables told me to throw 2 3 to my crib. |

Nothing obvious presents itself, so I'll toss myself 2-3 and pray the opponent throws me something to propel me down the board. |

I think this would provide me with a better defensive pegging hand and with my opponent at 57 I’m on the defense. |

hmmmm..I do not recall ever seeing the top three Liam dealer discards resulting in benefiting ..hand or crib..from all cuts. Playing pegging defense ( Pone @ 57)..the book says a five in a dealer’s keep is considered a potential pegging liability ..waiting for Ras to teach me 2-3 discard is the best idea until it isn’t ! |

Has anyone done the math analysis? My choice of 5 7 seems to open up the most possibilities and it should be a sure 2 points in the crib, even of the cut card isn't a 5 or a 6. Eolus619 says: morning..good to see you posting..welcome..Coeurdelion and Hal will have it later .. but between yourself and Liam it’s worth you doing it on your own.. Eolus619 says: and then Ras also will share his thoughts too..which are quite insightful |

While 5-7-9-10 is not the most defensive way to hold the hand, the (2-3) is just too strong not to toss it to our Crib. Besides, low cards are a pegging liability as well. Not just the 5. Like the past two days I think the expected averages will be within a tenth of a point. So style of play may rule the day. Defense to the lead. I think I will take the (15-2) on an X-Card lead to be rid of it. |

I tend to play my hand first, crib second, and pegging third (except for the endgame) so I tossed 7-9 to the crib. The 5 cut was unexpected and added 6 points to my hand. CribPro results: 73-70 for a net gain of 5 points. |

Considered 2-3 and 7-9 today, but didn’t like how 5-7-9-10 looked as my keep if I had tossed the superior 2-3 to my crib. Others have voiced that 2-3-5-10 isn’t a great pegging hand either as dealer, so 2-3 might be the better toss after all today. |

Choosing defense this day as opponent needs 12 holes to deal from 3rd Street CPZ (69-73). Would like to hold n/d to 8 points or less. That means peg avoidance, play off the lead. Would play that lone 5 on any X-point lead as don't wish to retain the 5 as it can be trapped by 3-4, 4-6, 5-5, or 6-7. So, scoring two pegs with a lone 5 is often the best out. It's goodbye 2-3. BTW, with any other two mid-cards, the 2-3-5-X would be the better hand to retain with the mid-cards discarded to crib. Not much else to add. Yes, even cards 6-8 have much higher crib average to dealer than do odd cards 7-9. MarktheShark says: Hi Ras, HalsCribCLX has not shown up yet to show me the numbers, so I wonder how defensive the 2-3 pitch is compared to the 5-7 pitch. The 2-3 pitch gives you more combined hand meld by maybe 1 hole (which I thought we did not need), but is it better for defensive pegging? (I do not mind holding small cards, so long as there are more than one.) |
