In a pure Defensive Stance, the "Safety in Numbers" of retaining the PAIRS Royal should be worthwhile and sufficient, but with the Dealer needing just Six Holes, and with us as Pone only needing half as much or Three Holes, I believe that makes this Endgame Battle a Special Case. 👜
And in such a case, with a nearly 9% risk of a Jack Cut and 'Two for Heels' for the Dealer, it's probably a better plan to hold a variety and Keep (A 4 T K), because in this scenario, as long as we can "get as much as we give" during any pegging, then we should have nothing to fear. Let's Toss (K K) today, and retain an assortment for this Special Case Endgame Scenario. After the harmless Deuce Cut, let's lead our Ace, since in doing so we rid ourselves of the Lone Small Card liability. Look to unload the Ten "T" Card next, when it CANNOT be used against us in an 8-9-T, 9-T-J, or T-J-Q Run. Then, we are left with the nearly harmless 4-K duo. Be aware that if the Dealer does get to lead in a Two-on-One scenario during a final volley of pegging, that a competent Dealer holding a 5-6 duo can peg Six Points (unanswered) against a solitary 4 Card, so it's wise to get rid of this card early as well! 😸 Let's look at a few play-outs: (A 4 T K) (K K) vs (A 5 8 J) (J Q) Cut = 7c Pegging: A (1) A (2=2) K (12) J (22) 4 (26) 5 (31=2), T (10) 8 (18-1), (121-120*). (A 4 T K) (K K) vs (2 3 5 7) (8 Q) Cut = 7h Pegging: A (1) 7 (8) T (18) 5 (23) 4 (27) 3 (30=4), K (10) 2 (12=1), (121-120*). (A 4 T K) (K K) vs (2 5 6 8) (6 9) Cut = 6c Pegging: A (1) 6 (7) T (17) 8 (25) 4 (29) 2 (31=2), K (10) 5 (15=3), (121-120*). |

Very difficult for dealer to peg six holes anywhere on the board without assistance from n/d. Dealer average is 3.5 pegs. Will get rid of the most dangerous card among these four on the lead. Goodbye Ace! And dump the four as second card played if looks reasonably safe to do so. Avoid pegs thereafter. Let's win with first count. Only way dealer can win is to peg. JQT says it all right above in splendid fashion. Ras2829 says: Would be most unusual to lose this game if avoiding pegs. Have a plan and follow it. Don't get cute! Eolus619 says: Well Ras...it would be most unusual for YOU..the problem for the rest of us is we ARE NOT YOU |

Why would I keep six points here? Lead the Ace here and dodge and weave. dec |

I kept 10-KKK. I lost because the opponent held 4567. I figured the A4 was a liability, but regardless of how smart you think you are, the dysfunctional Cribbage Fairy can zap you.
About an inch of annoyance snow here in Northern Massachusetts. Makes everything look cleaner. lonmower says: My first thought was: "Gougie00 had this hand and lost"
I lived in Boston for one year (1969). In that time (and since), I never heard about or considered NORTHERN Massachusetts haha |

We only need to keep 3 points in our hand. Previous comments are helpful for holding and pegging analysis. Thank you to those who have put out the time to do so. |

I don’t like keeping the 10 as there’s three still out there unaccounted for. Will keep the pair of Ks which should be very safe from being paired with only one left in the deck. Will lead the ace to get rid of it early. |

Keep the 4 points required to win and then play defensively. Lead the 4. Assman says: Speaking from experience, it's painful to be defeated in the position by getting pegged to death. Dealer is in the cat-bird seat for pegging and sometimes it just goes against you... |

Keeping enough to win and 4 separate cards (with a high and low combo) to provide more options in play. |

The game is not in the bag, as no matter what we hold, it is POSSIBLE for dealer to peg 6 unanswered points, though very difficult - what is the best way to countervene this? I think by holding the most variety of cards since we are only 3 points away from pegging out. The biggest problem with holding all 10's (10-K-K-K) is there is no ability to switch tactics with many "common" dealer holdings which will lose us the game (notably 5-5-6, or 4-5-6-7.). The safety of having the K's becomes nullified since we have no choice but to lead a 10-value card and keep playing them. The "A" also represents somewhat of a liability, as we'd like to keep on raising the count and not get "cute" here. So keeping the A with 3 faces (A-K-K-K) may not be as good as it appears, as we could be stuck with this card until the end. We would like to lead it, but once again, we have no choice among what to play for the rest of the sequence. Thus, (4-K-K-K) does not seem like a bad option. Even if dealer pairs our opening lead of a 4, at least by playing the K raises the count above 15, and he is unlikely to have a scoring response while holding 3 ourselves. There are still several playouts that could cause us to lose, especially if a J is cut. So, since we are also only 3 holes away from pegging out, I go back to the "variety" hold of (A-4-10-K), while leading the Ace, we still maintain some pegging flexibility, and we get rid of our most dangerous card. MiketheExpert says: Trouble may ensue if dealer ends up pairing our A lead, since let's face it, there is no incentive for dealer not to score on any card we lay down if he can do so. It would seem we have to follow then with the K, while we are stuck at a pip count of 12. Here our "10" is saved for a time where it cannot be paired. Really, the only reason to hold the most "flexible" hand is because of the J cut - we are more likely then to have to peg out, as it is much more difficult to prevent dealer from scoring 4 pegs than 6. If the heels did not exist for the J, there is no reason for any attempt to try and score during the pegging - I believe then (A 4 K K) would be the proper hold. Assman says: Great commentary! Thank you! |

I believe my fading memory is correct..Ras says most likely card help by dealer is a K…Schell says it’s a 10…so i prefer having two Ks to lessen the chance of a K being paired. As Ras says..have a pegging plan..so I will anticipate my lead Ace being paired. Eolus619 says: whoops ..held by dealer ..not help…geez Eolus619 says: btw..this link to a cribbage forum article about card frequency is worth the read when you have a moment

If lost the game with this hold, I’d quit playing cribbage 🤣 Eolus619 says: Hello False..A(1)-A( 2) K(12) 3(15/2) K(25)..6(31/2)…6 pts & 121.. JQT says: Also, the Dealer will get a Jack Cut nearly 9% of the time, so we should expect to lose in this Relative Position perhaps about 15% of the time, even with best play. I tried about fifty playouts with Rex Cribbage, and this was confirmed. |
