5 7 to my crib. Just seemed right.

Prefer this hold to the Flush. Not happy about 4-J to my crib. Balance points between hand and crib cards with this hold.

A4 already with 2 face cards; 57 more versatile in the crib. This hand appeared about 5 weeks ago or so.

Going for biggest bang for the buck here. 5-7 should produce a 6 crib minimum.

Considered the flush but didn't care for the J4 to my crib but maybe theirs. 57 seemed a better option.

I don’t like the flush today.
Assman says: After the A starter there are 10 points in the hand and prospects for a decent crib. Hope to get an average haul on the pegging.

Both the flush, and the A-4-J-Q have the Magic Eleven, with the A response to any X-Card lead. But this way there are *two* chances to score the (31-4) after another X-Card.

I see this as a choice between pitching the standard (?) 5-7 and keeping the flush, although I know there will be many votes for A-4, 5-J and 5-Q, none of which are bad. First hand, so I will pitch the 5-7 for better defensive pegging. (Jazz's comment encourages me to look back to see what the consensus was without the flush option.)

Like this hold especially with the touching face cards. 5-7 is a top 12 offensive toss to our crib.

The choice between the flush and A-4-J-Q seemed close to me. I took the time to put the cuts thru bucktheodds to compare. I am struggling with format. The cut is on the left and the resulting points ..hand + crib is on the right. Top line is flush ..you can add one more point to the top line if a club is cut

A/10..2/10..3/8..4/10..5/12..6/9..7/10..8/8..9/8..10/8..J/10..Q/10..K/8

A/10..2/4..3/6..4/10..5/10..6/7..7/6..8/6..9/4..10/11..J/10..Q/10..K/11

All cuts help either when hand + crib is considered ..but all flush cuts produce at least eight points for the flush …only seven do so for A-4-J-Q..

I certainly respect those elite players who discarded 5/7..but the flush has the cuts ..it is possible the “11s” carry the day..

i checked my calculations twice..but I could be wrong !

Standard Issue Toss (5 7). 🥾
Eolus619 says: John…I certainly see the merits of the 5/7 discard. Not sure it is the one tue path today See my post above ..the FLUSH has merits of its own ..including all cuts helping hand or crib and producing at least eight total points.
Eolus619 says: geeez..meant to write one true path

The flush is a solid play. It guarantees 8 points in the hand and it’s arguably equal or better for pegging than the hand you referenced. I just didn’t like the 4J to my crib.

Choice of strategy is key to choice here. AS opening dealer, defense is key and play off the lead. Would not pair either J/Q even though have Ace to score 31-2 if n/d were to triple. Now if somewhere else onboard, choosing offense as strategy, holding the flush has a good edge because of a much greater hand potential (very near 9 points) and much greater pegging potential. Be flexible enough to accommodate that need. You'll have to fine-tune your positional cribbage if you want to improve on choosing an appropriate strategy that fits. It is not possible to do the latter without sharpening the former.
Ras2829 says: Must have screwed up - my choice was A-4-J-Q. Comments won't make sense with the flush showing above. Comments are exactly as intended - display not so.
