I believe this puzzle is about trying to avoid "poisoning" our Crib with Toss (6 K), and it's also about avoiding a PAIR to our Own Crib if and when a better alternative exists. ๐
Let's Toss (T J) today. After the Trey of Hearts Cut, we now have Six Points in our Hand, with prospects for an average, but possibly disappointing Crib. ๐ RAS has a few more puzzles in the queue until April 29, 2025, but please realize that these were all posted in February and March. A few of his puzzles that were set to appear in March and April had Pone and Dealer swapped, so I fixed these as best as I could. I sent RAS an email describing these changes on April 2, 2025, but never heard back from him, which is unusual. I keep hoping that I'll see his name appear in a posting or a reply again. Sadly, I believe that the last actual post by RAS was on March 16, 2025. During the sixteen years and four months since he joined "Hand of the Day" back in November 2008, RAS has voted on this site a stunning 5496 times! โจ The very next day, on March 17, 2025, there is a reply by RAS that says, "Ras2829 says: AMEN!!!! Having to discard K6 spoils the flush option for me. Especially since there's another K and 6 in the hand.

I considered the pairs but that meant tossing connectors so opted to get my four points via the flush Djgoat says: Seems few others liked this choice Djgoat says: It was too early and I looked at it wrong, thinking it was their crib. Looking at it now I would have tossed the 6s. |

I will keep 4 points, hope to grow a few in my crib and play defense as First Dealer. I am in the tiny T-J camp. Not a fan of the other three reasonable options. |

6 6 should score higher in my crib than K K. I didnโt want to keep the flush and throw K 6. JQT says: Today we examine whether to place a PAIR or "Touching Cards" into our own Crib. First, let's look at the cards that make (6 6) grow: (4 5), (5 7), (3 6), (6 9), (9 9), etc. Now let's look at the cards that make (T J) grow: (8 9), (9 T), (9 Q), (T Q), (Q K), etc. Which combinations is Pone more likely to give to us, the Dealer? When building our Crib, we have to look beyond VALUE and evaluate GROWTH. A PAIR of 6 Cards is ALREADY worth a lot, whether these end up in our Hand or our Crib, as long as we don't break them apart. The (T J) meanwhile begins with NOTHING, so any added help is ALL ADDED GROWTH. A large portion of the Crib Value when we discard a PAIR comes from the PAIR itself, which we already had to begin with in our Hand! As the Dealer, we get to tally BOTH the Hand and the Crib, so we seek the most GROWTH. ๐ฆ ๐ฒ |

I'm initially planning to play defense and would prefer to avoid all X cards given that's the hand people most often talk of planning their pegging around, so I'll avoid pitching the 6-6 if I can find a decent alternative.
The flush is only worth 4 and tosses crib poison in the K-6 (and we know there are only two of each left out there to potentially help the crib making it worse than normal). I can still keep 4 with the 6-6-K-K and put a decent (but not stellar) connected 10-J in the crib. This also gives what looks like a decent defensive pegger with two pairs (though I will grant our prospects of getting the average 16 look bleak today and I understand there are players that may look to peg a bit as first dealer when faced with such poor prospects). |
