SallyAnn3Very last hand of our 22 game main in SC. Cost me qualifying! I got several opinions, so what's yours?

Tossing 8-K to opponent is fairly safe with holding two sevens. But we need 14 points and are holding 8 points after the starter card. Don't see pegging six. These are the only cards that gives us a chance for 16.
ryman554 says: Why do you care about scoring 16? 14 will do. That should be the number you focus on. Maybe 12 if you think you can peg 2 points...
Rosemarie44 says: A sure thing is getting enough points so that I don't have to worry about how much I need to peg.

tevdodd says: I threw Q-K hand 2 which was the 100 discard according to Crib Pro, but it ended up putting them 9 more pegs down the board, ultimately the overall difference in result today. That said, I think 5-Q is the correct answer for you in hand 5. Starts with 10, cuts everywhere. (Except 4) I find your hand 8 discard intriguing, and frankly, I'd like an explanation :)
tevdodd says: 3 doesn't help that cut either, but either 3 or 4 paired with the 5 in crib is solid potential.
james500 says: Good afternoon, hope you're well. Hand 5 was a tricky one, (5c-6c-7c-8h-9h-Qc for anybody who hasn't played). I chose the 5-6-7-Q flush with suited 8-9 to the crib, (nine points and all cuts bar an Ace bringing more, consecutive suited cards in the crib), but I agree that 6-7-8-9 and 5-Q to the crib might just be better. Maybe a good puzzle for here? Hand 8, (A-3-3-5-8-10 for those who haven't seen), was a gamble. I went with 3-3-5-8 (A-10) because, (a), it allowed me to play the hand as a 3-5-8 sixteen as well as a 3-5-3 eleven depending on their reply, and (b), with a 5 in my hand, maybe the 10 to them is weaker?. All cuts bar a 6 get me back to the 4 points I could've had with 3-3-5-10, so I thought it might be worth trying. I'm probably guilty of looking a gift horse in the mouth though, and should have just started with the guaranteed four points.

I would play this and see if the threes and sixes managed to get into a cut place in the deck. At least a chance better then a few four hands I could think of to get on this deal. They would not pair your five lead unless they had two of them. At least I would not. dec

Both holds have the same number of cuts for 14 and 12. This hold has 4 more cuts for 10. I threw the wrong suit. Should've thrown 5d. Lead the 8 here after the cut to 8. Last ride home is to run the 7s with one of theirs.

Daily Scrimmage was a loss for me today with pegging mistakes left and right, clearly I'm pretty rusty from a couple days away. That said, my favorite discard is probably 8-8 from 37-32*.

We need to beat the Dealer to the game hole, before he can count his hand and crib. Hoped for a better cut card, so the best we can do now is to lead the spade 7 and hope Dealer is a weak player or he kept the wrong cards.

This is β€œit” ..need to start with max points (6) in the keep & must play for a favorable cut ( 3-6-7-8-9).Also likely to have to peg at least two points. Sending points to dealer crib does not matter imo

This hold doesn't do as well (as 5-5-7-7 does) with a 3-cut but it's still competitive while also benefiting from the 6 or 9.

I lamented all of the above, and didn't care about the crib. Playing someone I don't know, so that didn't help. Almost went for the gut shot. Then
figured I might make it if I held 5/5/7/K, but negative delta with having 2 5's already. So I held 5/7/7/8. The 5 cut, and I'd have my 14 in hand! I asked the good players what they'd do (several on here) and at least got the gratification that I'd held it "right". Stupid cut!

Calling this the "Very Last Hand" of the game may be both logically and mathematically accurate, but to start out with our first thoughts being restrictive takes away a possible avenue with which we might be able to WIN this game, because if we can 'd-r-a-g' this game out for another deal, it may be one way to allow us to WIN.

We are Pone with First Hand Show, but since we're starting this ostensibly 'Do-or-Die' mission way back at Hole 107, we need a massive Fourteen Points to "Bring Home the Bacon" and "Get the Job Done" and that is Four Points ABOVE or 40% greater than the Pone Average of Ten Points.

Another way that I can see us grabbing First Place here is to get close enough by the completion of this deal to Peg Out during Next Deal when we are the Dealer with the Pegging Advantage. And yet this means we'll have to prevent the Current Dealer from tallying Ten Points via total Pegging, plus Hand, plus Crib, during which Sixteen Points is the Dealer Average.

We've been dealt HALF of the 5 Cards, so while I wouldn't say we have the Advantage or anything quite like it, it's clear that BOTH options just discussed are still "on the table" and ready for us to find a way to exploit and thus MAYBE allow us to WIN this game! I believe our best chance of winning this game is to seek a Dozen Points, and try to peg the remaining Two Holes. Our CONFIDENCE is every bit as important as our CARDS in such a Cribbage Endgame, so grab it, embrace it, and do NOT be discouraged!

Holding (5 5 7 7) gives us Four Cuts (6666) that put us in Victory Lane, and another Four Cuts (3333) that yield a Dozen Points;

The 5-5-K construct can become a Dozen Points or more after a few "helpers" including a 5 Card (55) or a King (KKK); and if we also hold one 7 Card, a 6 Card Cut (6666) will also yield a Dozen Points. This should make (5 5 7 K) slightly better than (5 5 7 7);

The 7-7-8 construct can become a Dozen Points or more after numerous "helpers" which include ANY Middle Card (6666, 77, 888, 9999), and these possibilities appear to outnumber those that help 5-5-K. Therefore, the (5 7 7 8) Hand should outperform (5 5 7 K) by a small but measurable amount.

Let's Toss (5 K) today, which may seem reckless, but it is indeed slightly safer than Toss (7 8), and it also boosts our chances of receiving a favorable cut. After the Queen Cut, we still have just Six Points in our Hand, and we'll likely LOSE this game, and our task is simply to reduce those Spread Points by which we lose. Let's lead a 7 Card from our PAIR. 🍸 πŸ₯¨

ryman554 says: Couldn't have said it better. Tho what would you do if the dealer had 109? 107? Tossing the K5 to the dealer pretty much guarantees this is the last hand. What point total of the dealer (and don't say 96) would to keep something different? And what would it be?
JQT says: A Dealer at Hole 109, i.e., (107-109*) presents a similar risk, since Dealer Average is Sixteen Points. The (5 7 7 8) Idea is probably best for a wide variety of Dealer locations; only if our own score as Pone is altered would I likely begin to converge upon other solutions for our Hand. 🌷
Inushtuk1 says: Hey John. Just learned that Chuck Mangione died recently. A resident of Rochester; only about an hour or so away from you. Did you ever attend any of his concerts in the area?
JQT says: "Land of Make Believe" (1973) by Chuck Mangione came out the year I met my girlfriend in 9th grade (1973), who I would later marry, and she was a big fan of Chuck Mangione, especially a few years later "Children of Sanchez" (1978), so I remember it well. I love the Blues and some Jazz, yet I was not into the "disco drumbeat" sound with its characteristic 120 beats-per-minute 'drone' that overtook virtually all genres of music in the latter half of the 1970s (you can even hear it already creeping into "Feels So Good" where it attempts to entirely "swallow up" the song, but cannot quite ruin it), as this "mechanized music" style caused a huge number of actual artists to be replaced by synthesizers and turntables, something that Mangione largely escaped, but countless other artists had had their careers upturned and even ended by the disco virus. Dance clubs would then feature disco "music" spun on turntables instead of being performed by real, live performers, and real musicians could no longer find work! There was a time in the late 1970s when disco invaded nearly every form of music, but then it finally gave way (I guess this is turning into an "opinion piece"!) in the 1980s and 1990s, and then along came Hip-Hop and Rap, when you didn't need to play or even own a musical instrument whatsoever! 😨https://youtu.be/1mLdUFw4Xfc https://youtu.be/I0wK8EVJdbg
Inushtuk1 says: I bought that album in my first or second year of university. I loved that version with Esther Satterfield, and I believe it was the Rochester Philharmonic ,even better than the quartet version with Jerry Niewood.
JQT says: Well, if Hal (of Halscrib infamy, who lives in Hamilton, Ontario, which is about as far to the northwest of me as Rochester, New York is to the northeast of me) is reading this, he (or your AI equivalent search tool) may remind you that the "Land of Make Believe" (1973) by Chuck Mangione was recorded at Massey Hall, Toronto, Ontario, Canada and features the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, not the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 🍁 Several of Mangione's other albums were indeed accompanied by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, including "Friends & Love," a double album recorded live at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York on May 9, 1970, and "Together: A New Chuck Mangione Concert," another double album recorded live at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester. I remember the days when I would shovel snow to earn money in order to buy new record albums, and once, after a record-long, brutal snowfall, I could afford a new stylus for my stereo system, the single piece in the chain of a sound system (if the music is not "captured" here, it is forever lost) that has the greatest effect on the clarity of the musical reproduction (next is the accuracy of the driver coils and crossovers in the speakers). Brand Names we used to dream about as though they were fashion models: Ortofon, Grado, Sumiko, Stanton, Nagaoka, Hana, Dynavector, Sonus, and others. I never waded THAT DEEP into the wonderful world of sound reproduction, but many did, and in the same way you would once "break in" a new engine, there was a time when it was recommended for some very high-end (read: expensive!) phono cartridges, you might have to "break in" a new stylus as well, leaving the needle in the record groove at a preset weight (number of grams; a splendid way for those of us in the United States to start learning the Metric System!), with the turntable turned off, for several hours at a time each night for a few weeks, in order to have it "break in" the stiff, new bearing properly on a moving coil type cartridge. Doing so would ensure that you derive the maximum amount of accurate playing time, up to 1,000 hours if broken-in and set up properly. Then along came the compact disc, which everybody agrees ended all discussions regarding music and hi-fidelity! 🎢 🎺 πŸ”Š "Children of Sanchez" (1978): https://youtu.be/XLs1uOC6V1Q

ryman554 says: Why is the 5 spade preferred over the diamond to toss? The K is a heart after all, and we see one of each suit in our hand....
JQT says: The suit of the 5 Card is entirely academic today, although if we do plan on leading a 7s Card, it's just a good habit to retain the 5s of Spades and lead the 7s of Spades to fake a FLUSH, as it costs us nothing to do so. β™

Picking 5577 and holding out for the 6 only has a 4/46 chance of succeeding whereas with 5778, you have an 11/46 chance of getting 12 which gets be enough if you preg well. On the other hand, you are not giving points to the crib in the former scenario. Am I just pointing out the obvious? Lol.

At 107-111* playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:

_______________Our
Offense___Hand_Pegs_Crib____Total___Win %___Loss %
5-5-7-8____7.65+1.26+(-3.50)=5.41_____7.7____78.8
5-5-7-7____7.74+1.17+(-3.51)=5.40____14.8____78.6
5-7-7-8____9.30+1.24+(-7.17)=3.37____21.9____78.1
5-5-8-K____8.35+1.11+(-6.12)=3.34____12.3____87.7
5-5-7-K____8.87+1.07+(-6.82)=3.12____18.4____81.6

Although 5-5-7-8 is best for expected averages in this end of game board position Win/Loss %s are much more important and 5-7-7-8 is appreciably best for Win %s and very slightly lowest for Loss %s. So I'll select a 5-K to discard.

After the Q cut I'll lead a 7 and play Offense:

Lead__________Our Pegging Points
7___________________1.40
5___________________1.31
8___________________1.04
