I know playing on with these peggers can be risky but the deeper I can get into the late 60s after this deal the better I feel about my position. I like the gap throw of 5-7 in my crib. dec

Automatic 5-7 as Dealer and A-7 as Pone?
fentesk says: I may lean towards A-2 as pone, but it would be between that and A-7.
MarktheShark says: I am a pegger, so I pitch A-7 as Pone. A-2 is close in hand value but leaves a much poorer pegging hand. What do you lead from 3-4-5-7 and then what do you play on Dealer's X-card? (I lead the 4 and play the 5 on an X-card.) Much easier to score pegging holes with 2-3-4-5.
fentesk says: Thanks for the thoughts. I agree I'd lead the 4 and take the 15-2 in general as you note.
MarktheShark says: 31-2. 4(4)-X(14)-5(19)-5?(24-2)-7(31-2). Fewer ways to score pegs with 3-4-5-7 as Pone. Or, the more common 4(4)-4(8-2)-7(15-2).

JQT did not like a five at the end of a three card run ..today, these six cards , i don’t either
Rackrunner says: Whatever happened to that guy ? I miss their posts !
Rosemarie44 says: I wonder too. On the last post from JQT someone suggested he limit his comments to cribbage only.
feralba24 says: Rosemarie44. I wonder too. I miss JQT commentary and input. Would be interested on the last post date that someone limit his comments.
feralba24 says: Eolus619 ?
Rosemarie44 says: feralba24: I can't remember the post date.
MarktheShark says: Might have been 12 August 2025.
Rosemarie44 says: Yes, The post date was August 12, 2025
feralba24 says: MarktheShark and Rosemarie. Thank you for the post date. To clarify I am not a fan of JQT politics. Wish him well and to return. Thank you for the responce
feralba24 says: Eolus619. 8.12.25 response to JQT was eloquent.
Rosemarie44 says: I think that the point isn't that we need to be a fan of someone's politics.
MarktheShark says: And my comment on 12 August 2025 is even more important today. Our power-mad king wants to reshape "his" government into his liking before he loses his support in Congress during next year's elections. I support those who help save the information he does not like and has tried to destroy from public view. Am I now also banned? As a science fiction fan, I am reminded of Isaac Asimov's "Mule" in his Foundation series.
Eolus619 says: Hello Mark..I will not be the one who attempts to limit someone’s free speech..I have much respect for JQT and his contribution to DCH… my comments were not suggesting he or anyone else be banned ..I just thought DCH was a forum for cribbage discussion not politics ..if commenters want to post about politics on DCH go ahead ..as for me ?. I am now out ..I can get my politics on various blogs ..I learned a lot ….thanks and all the best to the DCHers in the future
MarktheShark says: Just to be clear, my comments were meant for feral's attitude. I will now resign from this group.

Play the 4 on a face-card lead, may then sneak in the A23 for 4 points. Often get a 6X throw from the opponent to fill in the 57.

Putting the 5 card in the crib seems a sensible idea. The 7,4 or Ace are all possible partners for it.

1. 2-2, (10-10?)
2. 6-6, (6-Q?)
3. 8-8
4. 3-Q, (3-10?)
5. 7-10, (flush?)
6. 4-8, (4-7?)
7. 3-4, (6-9, J-Q?)
8. 4-K

A few hands where the right decision wasn't crystal clear to me. I think there'll be some variety amongst the choices of the contributors.
fentesk says: This was an interesting Scrimmage today. I was a bit short as I was overly defensive and saw an extra hand as dealer that put the game in jeopardy for me (121-114). Hand 1 I sent 10-10 to avoid pegging with X-X-X-X, then decided to keep playing defense in Hand 2 with Q-6. Hand 6 I tried Q-4, but I feel that was probably a poor play (I couldn't decide between it and 4-7 or 4-8), then sent J-Q in Hand 7 to keep the low cards.

Nice when able to put a 5 in crib and the 7 fits well too

Botched my first throw this morning without looking at situation. Hope this one is correct. It's island time again today with the known 5 holding A237 and pitching 4-5 suited.

tevdodd says: That's ok, this mai-tai hits the spot just right and if we all played the same it would be boring :)

At first blush I was about to keep A-2-3-7(4-5). I have the underrated two star toss in my Crib, and a hand that improves on every cut. But wait a minute. A-2-3-4 also improves on every cut, and starts with 4; and two key connectors in the Crib. Yes, the 4 on the X-Card lead. Yes again, A-2-3-4 playing Offense, does have some risk; but at this score, it's well worth it.

JQT taught me to think of the crib as an extension of the hand (when dealer). I will gladly put the (5 7) into my crib. After the J cut we have two for his heels, eight points in the hand, good (not great) peggers, and at least two in the crib.

I prefer this way. I don't care to keep A thru 4 generally but today may have been an exception.

An _additional_ thought is that keeping the A4 23 together gives us 3 "5"s which plays well with a probable 10...

Every cut helps and a 5 in the crib. What could possibly go wrong?

I'd rather take my chances on the A,2 turning into something than any of the other combinations. As for the "keepers", well these are more attractive to me than any of the others.
MarktheShark says: Pitching the A-2 does have the most upside for hand value, but pitching the 5 has better prospects in the crib.
Sgt Pegger says: I agree with your counter! .....However, we have a slight lead and I'm looking more at the pegging opportunities over the crib value. Personal choice that seems to serve me well.
MarktheShark says: As a pegger, I agree 3-4-5-7 is better than A-2-3-4 as Dealer. (But, as I mentioned above, 3-4-5-7 is poor for Pone pegging.)

At 51*-42 laying a Defense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:

_______________Pone's
Defense___Hand_Pegs____Crib_Total____W5 %____W6 %
A-2-3-4____8.15+(-2.20)+6.11=12.06____42.0____74.8
A-2-3-7____6.17+(-2.11)+6.46=10.52____35.0____68.5
2-3-4-5____8.63+(-2.07)+3.62=10.18____34.5____67.6
3-4-5-7____8.35+(-2.13)+3.77= 9.99____34.2____67.1

Defense_______L5 %____L6 %
A-2-3-4________5.6_____6.6
A-2-3-7________5.5_____9.0
2-3-4-5________6.0_____9.7
3-4-5-7________5.6_____9.5

A-2-3-4 is best for expected averages by 1.54pts. and is very much best for Win %s and lowest for Loss %s. So, I'll select the 5-7 to discard.

After the J cut I'll play Optimally to the lead (cautious offense).
