I believe this is the best that I can do with today's hand. I didn't want to toss a five to dealer. Help with the starter card! Rosemarie44 says: Where is John when you need him? 10-10 submission has a hand with two cards that are both 5 of hearts. lonmower says: What happened to John? Inushtuk1 says: Hi Rosemarie. I thought about deleting that hand; but if we just ignore the fact that we have two fives of hearts; it's still a good puzzle in my opinion. Rosemarie44 says: I guess there is no way to change the cards. We will see when the hand comes up tomorrow. Thanks. Rosemarie44 says: Ionmower: I don't know why he isn't posting. tevdodd says: If I understand it correctly, if you deleted and immediately inputted a new hand, the new hand would replace the foremost opening, which would be tomorrow. Of course, the downfall being if someone just happens to input a different hand in the 30 second differential. That said, I could 100% be incorrect in this. Rosemarie44 says: tevdodd: Not sure so I emailed the Webmaster about this situation. We could be without a hand tomorrow unless action is taken. |

Tough positional puzzle today-I think we have to risk the dangerous 88 discard to play to get to 70 or beyond |

Picked 8-8 instead of 5-8 and definitely not 5-6. dec |

I'm going to hedge with the 5-8 today. I still keep 6 points, it has a lower chance of going boom in the crib, and I still have a lot of potential for 8+. Inushtuk1 says: Hi Scott. What's you lead after the slightly disappointing cut?
scottcrib says: The cut gets me to at least 70, so I'm not disappointed at all, especially since that leaves A-5-8 in the crib which is not scary.
My lead will vary depending upon my opponent, but most of the time I'll play defense and lead the 9c here. |

It's a close one. I score either 5-8 pitches at 7.32 while the 8s pitch gets a 7.22.
So with the Ace showing up, the 8s was the way to go. |

Why would you give away points in this case?!
Dealer is already at par and you are way behind. Slow the game! fentesk says: I think that's a difficulty of this hand today, both the 5-8 and 8-8 are giving away a guaranteed two points to dealer (and probably the most defensive discard is 8-9 or 6-8, neither of which are balks and rip much of the offensive potential from the hand. With that said, which is better, 5-8 or 8-8 is not immediately clear to me and I think they'll be close. ryman554 says: Dealer would deal 88-96* on average. Dealer is at par, but are far from behind. Ahead, actually. We're right where we need to be to play defense. But we need enough offense to stay on par. This appears not to be the hand to play defense. |

I'm in the 5-8 camp.

We agreed on 3/9 discards (Ignoring position, because obviously it's off the rails after we first diverge) That said, our scores were fairly similar at the end with a 121 to 92 win for me. I will say, I botched hand 7, for some reason my eyes read the Q as a heart this morning. james500 says: Hi, hope you're well. I agree completely, a very interesting puzzle today. Many of my choices could have been made differently, as there were 2/3 good options available. Difficult to tell as the position would have been different, but Alternatives I could have picked: (1) 10-Q, (3) J-J, (4) K-A, (6) K-A, (8) A-8 tevdodd says: For what it's worth. I don’t like throwing a 5 (or 8) to dealers crib, but like giving dealer 2 points with pair of 8s less. |

Such a dangerous hand. The toss could hurt no matter what but I'm hoping they threw paint so I am keeping the 5.

I will hold 6 points this way. Prefer 58 to the crib rather than 88. There is no possible balking combination with this collection of cards. Inushtuk1 says: And your lead Dan? Rosemarie44 says: Dan: Now that JQT is not available presently, is someone going to moderate the submissions? Matt, the webmaster is inquiring>. I had to call on him to fix tomorrow's submission. Inushtuk1 says: Hi Dan. Was that a mistake? Did you mean to toss (5-8)? |

Not much of a choice, really. |

I'm keeping the 5 and tossing the 88.
Reason: this hold has a better chance in increasing my hand in value. And I don't see much difference between the 85 and 88 tosses. We haven't seen a 7, so , but we do have 6 and 9, so the bingo crib may be less chance. This one comes down to luck. Cut card is lucky. Pray that luck continues. |

The position screams Defense; but there is no defensive discard amongst the bunch. I think (5-8) is the best for expected averages. Interesting hand as Dealer as well. (8-8), (5-6), and (5-8) are all valid options. |

Keep for a score to get to par hole 69 and restrict opponent’s position from their position on 70 (69+1). 8-8 and 8-5 are my likely throws ultimately throwing the latter because I’m not wanting to burn my whole game down on a 20+ crib if they throw one or two mid-ranked cards and see a mid-ranked card appear on the cut. For the play lead 6. 8-9-9 seems very safe for the second round of the play maybe even landing trips 9s or a 3-run.

At 62-70* playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
_______________Our Offense___Hand_Pegs_Crib____Total___W4 %____W5 % 5-6-9-9____8.52+1.48+(-5.78)=4.22____21.3____29.1 6-8-9-9____8.30+1.33+(-6.20)=3.43____20.8____26.4 Offense______L4 %____L5 % 5-6-9-9_______50.6____59.5 6-8-9-9_______52.6____63.1 5-6-9-9 is better for expected averages by 0.79pt. and is significantly better for Win %s and considerably lower for Loss %s. So I'll select the 8-8 to discard. After the A cut I'll lead a 9 and play Defense: ___________________Dealer's Pegging Points 9_________________________(-2.18) 6_________________________(-2.30) 5_________________________(-3.40) Inushtuk1 says: Hi Hal. Both Ras, and Schell say (8-8) has a higher average over the board than (5-8). I know those are static averages, and yours are dynamic. But still... ryman554 says: Having 2 9s and a 6 off the board should drop the 88 toss average, assuming something like 67788 or 77889 are the ones which jack it up. ryman554 says: I wish these softwares would put out median and quartiles vs. average. Makes more sense Rosemarie44 says: The webmaster, Matt is inquiring about who would be taking over JQT's moderation duties since he is not posting presently. Inushtuk1 says: Hi Rosemarie44 and Matt. I wouldn't mind helping out in this regard, if you and every one else on this site is okay with that. No easy way to avoid handing out points with this hand. I'll throw 8-8 and hope not to see any 7s in Dealer's crib. |
